"Unweaving The Tangled Web"

Theme: Tapping the power of this new mass medium

Length: 30 to 40 minute speech, 1 to 3 hour class

Designed for: Businesses, non-profits, professional organizations, service clubs, chambers of commerce.

Summary:

Let's face it. It's hard to ignore the Web these days. With sites being added at the rate of 1.5 per second and with more than 20 million surfers out there, it's hard to get away from it. Even commercials have Web addresses plastered along their taglines.

But what is it truly about? Is it the CB radio or 8-track of the 90s? Or will it fundamentally alter the way we communicate, create and think?

This presentation sorts the hype from the hypertext. It explores the Web phenomenon within the context of existing mass mediums and offers thought provoking insight into where it's going. It guides attendees through the Web development process, focuses on providing content and substance, emphasizes value to the visitor, the importance of updating content, and how to create a site that not only sizzles, but meets your communication and marketing goals. This isn't a new technology: it's a new mass medium for sending and receiving information.

What we cover:

What the Web is and isn't. Get rich quick schemes abound. There's a huckster around every corner who will tell you that you'll get rich on the Web. We tell you what the Web can and can't do for your organization.

Content vs. Bells & Whistles. We explore the Fantasia Effect: filling pages with stunning graphics but not really putting any meat on the bones. Is a dancing cartoon character really necessary to get your message across? Or is content what really drives a site? We'll tell you.

The 10 trends that will shape the Web. Intranets, Shockwave, real time videoconferencing, online ordering -- we sort the wheat from the chaff regarding what's going to be hot and what's not on the Web in the years to come.

The five traits of an effective site. Learn from our award-winning Web design team the secrets of good design, solid architecture and effective sites.

The Web Checklist. A worksheet that allows you to ask the right questions when interviewing designers, Web programmers, ISPs, etc.

The dos and don'ts of Web efforts. We guide you through lessons learned so you don't make the same mistakes others have on the Web.

In the 1 to 3 hour class, attendees are walked through the entire Web site process, teaching Internet theory, terminology, design principles and site architecture in addition to the topics listed above.
