Amazing What Clients Buy

I’m constantly amazed at how people’s minds work. For example, I ran into a competitor’s site who charges $1500 just to review the materials you already wrote. This doesn’t cover anything else: no research, no writing, nothing. . . and clients are standing in line to pay her for the privilege of paying her this outlandish sum. Why?

Even if it took her three hours to review the work (and a real pro can do it in an hour) that’s $500 an hour. I think that’s outrageous.

Why do you ask? Because I’m not charging that? No, it’s because on the front page of her own site she has two grammatical errors. These aren’t little ones either. They are obvious to anyone who’s just scanning the copy. I think that’s a travesty for a so called Web Writing Expert.

So I gave her a break and looked through her client list and some of her writing. Nothing to write mom about (although I would write her mom to let her know her daughter’s not a great proofreader).

I really stress with my clients to get at least three bids for work such as copywriting or design. And I encourage them to review samples of their work. A web site can promise the sky but the proof as they say is in the pudding, or the actual work in this case. Don’t be fooled with a lot of gloss and puffery on vendor sites. Do your homework and no matter what, beware of the overpaid copywriter who glaring errors on his or her site that even my 7 year old could see!
